Is ChatGPT the Best AI Translator? [Hands-on Review]

Quick Answer

Yes for written text. No for live meetings and events

In our hands-on test, ChatGPT kept 12 of 12 meaning and terminology checkpoints (100%) on a Korean clinical trial summary, while Google Translate kept 10 of 12 (83%). For ChatGPT translation of emails and documents, ChatGPT gave us the most accurate and most adaptable output of any tool we tried.

Live calls need something else. ChatGPT voice translation runs as a conversation on a single phone, so a meeting with several speakers needs a tool that captures the call audio and shares captions with every participant.

ChatGPT translate requests now come from people who spent years pasting text into Google Translate or DeepL and then rewriting whatever came back stiff. The move makes sense. A classic engine gives you a single literal answer. As a translator, ChatGPT reads the full passage and rewrites the result for the person who will read it, so a purchasing manager can ask for a polite note to a supplier in Osaka and then for the same note in plainer words for a new hire in Madrid, inside the same chat.

A few numbers explain why ChatGPT translation has gone mainstream:

  • 900 million weekly users: OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers in February 2026, according to TechCrunch.
  • A dedicated ChatGPT translator: OpenAI quietly released ChatGPT Translate on January 15, 2026, the first standalone translator ChatGPT has offered, with support for more than 50 languages, as Slator reported.
  • A $30.85 billion industry: The Slator 2026 Language Industry Market Report values the language industry's addressable market at USD 30.85 billion for 2025.
  • Large language models at the top of the leaderboard: In the preliminary WMT25 rankings, GPT-4.1 and Gemini 2.5 Pro placed near the top, while the anonymized commercial engines, Google's and DeepL's among them, landed mid-table (Slator).

Popularity says little about ChatGPT translation quality, though, and a clinical summary or a supplier contract leaves no room for a loose word. ChatGPT now runs on several models with different effort levels, and the same Korean sentence can come back faster or slower, plainer or more technical, depending on how you ask. Using ChatGPT for translation at work calls for a hands-on review with the actual prompts on the page and a scorecard you can check line by line.

Who Should Read This Article?

Read on if ChatGPT already drafts half your messages and you want to know where its translations hold up and where they break. We wrote this review with these readers in mind:

  • Managers and founders with overseas partners: You send emails and quotes across languages every week, and using ChatGPT for translation already saves you a first draft.
  • Students and researchers: You rely on ChatGPT for translation of papers in a language you only half know, and you need the technical terms right.
  • Marketing and support teams: You adapt copy for new markets or answer customer messages in other languages, a pattern we map out in our guide to business translation use cases.
  • Anyone learning how to translate using ChatGPT: You want prompts that work on the first try and a clear sense of when to double-check the output.
  • People who run multilingual meetings and events: You want to know if ChatGPT can carry a live call or if a dedicated tool fits better.

Why Is This Article Different From Other Reviews?

Most ChatGPT translation reviews quote benchmark numbers and stop there, so we ran our own test. On October 22, 2026, we pasted a dense Korean passage from a clinical trial presentation into ChatGPT and Google Translate and ran it through the Translate tab inside the JotMe desktop app. We scored every output against the same 12 checkpoints. Then we asked ChatGPT to rewrite the passage for a cardiologist and for a cardiology student, and we timed every translation ChatGPT produced.

Every screenshot in this review comes from those sessions. We ran ChatGPT on GPT-6 Astra at Max effort, the strongest setting our account offered, so treat our ChatGPT scores as a ceiling for what a paid plan can do.

ChatGPT Translation Features: A Quick Guide

ChatGPT translation now covers typed text, files, photos, and speech, and the quality you get depends on the model and effort level behind your chat. Here is what each ChatGPT language translator feature does for you and who can use it as of October 2026.

Which ChatGPT Model Translates Best?

OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 Astra in September 2026 (CNBC), and the October 7 update gave Plus and higher plans GPT-6 Sol in the Chat tab while Free and Go users moved to GPT-6 Luna. The Work tab lets you pick a model and an effort level for each task, up to Max.

chatgpt translation language support

For translation, the effort level decides how long you wait. Our Max-effort rewrites took 15 and 29 seconds, while Google Translate answered as soon as we pasted the text. The phone app carries the same model and effort controls, which helps when you check a supplier's reply away from your desk.

chatgpt translation mobile language

We ran our test on GPT-6 Astra, so we can't score GPT-6 Luna on the free plan. For contracts or clinical text, pick the strongest model your plan allows and accept the wait. For a quick reply to a colleague, the default model on any plan is a sensible place to start a chatGPT translation to English.

Can ChatGPT Translate Documents?

Yes. Upload a PDF or Word file to any chat and name the target language. The Free plan caps uploads, and the Go plan and higher raise those limits (OpenAI). Our German scenario further down shows what to check before you share a translated file.

Can ChatGPT Translate Images?

Yes. A photo of a menu or a screenshot of a supplier's spec sheet goes through the same chat, and once you ask it to translate, ChatGPT reads the text inside the picture before it writes. The label scenario further down covers small print and handwriting.

Is There a ChatGPT Translation App?

At launch, OpenAI shipped ChatGPT Translate as a web page at chatgpt.com/translate, and Slator found no dedicated ChatGPT translation app for iOS or Android. The main ChatGPT app fills the gap as a ChatGPT translation app on your phone: its built-in language translator handles typed text and camera photos, and voice mode covers speech. For a standalone translator, ChatGPT sends you to the browser, and the ChatGPT translator page works on any device.

How Does ChatGPT Voice Translation Work?

ChatGPT's voice mode changed in July 2026, when OpenAI replaced Advanced Voice Mode with GPT-Live. GPT-Live listens and speaks at the same time, and OpenAI credits that design for its live translation. Free accounts get GPT-Live-1 mini, and paid accounts from Go upward get GPT-Live-1.

ChatGPT voice translation has no separate translator switch. You open voice, tell ChatGPT which two languages to interpret between, and it keeps going until you tell it to stop, as Slator noted when OpenAI first added the feature. Voice settings let you lock the spoken language or leave it on auto-detect, which matters when an accent keeps pulling the model into the wrong language.

chatgpt translation voices

On the phone, you can change the spoken language inside a voice session, so a conversation can switch from Korean to Japanese without starting over.

chatgpt translation mobile voices

Short exchanges suit voice translation best, and OpenAI itself flags the limits. The GPT-Live announcement says voice performs best in the most popular ChatGPT languages and that some languages can still carry a non-native accent or fluency gaps, which shapes ChatGPT voice translation in less common languages. The October 15 update brought GPT-Live-1.1, with more natural accents and new voices for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Mexican Spanish.

Can ChatGPT Translate Languages Beyond the Big Ones?

Yes, though quality drops in languages such as Somali or Armenian. OpenAI publishes no single list of translation languages for ChatGPT. ChatGPT Translate launched with more than 50 languages, and Slator's early tests found it handled some languages missing from that list.

ChatGPT translation quality drops as a language gets rarer online: a 2025 study in npj Digital Medicine rated ChatGPT-4o weakest in Armenian and Somali when it translated pediatric discharge instructions.

For Somali documents meant for patients or customers, ChatGPT will try, and those results make a human reviewer part of the job.

The language list in ChatGPT's general settings controls the app interface. A language appearing there tells you nothing about translation quality in that language.

How Does ChatGPT Compare to Other Translation Tools?

Each translator here does a different job well, so the right pick depends on what you translate and when you need it. ChatGPT leads on context and audience, while other tools win on speed or live calls. Here is the quick view before the test results.

Is ChatGPT Better Than Google Translate?

We started with the simplest ChatGPT translate-to-English request possible. We pasted the Korean passage into ChatGPT and asked for English, with no context and no instructions.

Prompt: Prompt we used (Korean source text, then a plain request)

chatgpt translation prompting

The plain ChatGPT translation to English kept every number, from 2,480 patients to the 18.7% risk reduction and the 1.4 percentage-point drop. It rendered all 4 trial-design terms and used the standard clinical name, "major adverse cardiovascular events," for MACE. It also kept "glycated hemoglobin" in front of HbA1c, a gloss the Korean source includes for listeners.

chatgpt translation languages

Next, we pasted the same passage into Google Translate.

chatgpt translation google translation

Google answered instantly and kept every number. It also dropped a word that matters. The Korean phrase describes major adverse cardiovascular events, and Google wrote "major cardiovascular events," which no longer matches the MACE acronym a clinician would look up. Google skipped the glycated hemoglobin gloss as well.

For a dense professional passage, ChatGPT beat Google Translate: it scored 12 of 12 on our checkpoints against Google's 10. For a 4-word street sign, Google's instant answer still makes it the faster tool, and if you translate with ChatGPT every day, keep Google Translate open for quick lookups. Languages at the far end of Google's list are a different story, and ChatGPT's output there needs a check.

Google is moving in the same direction as ChatGPT, too. In December 2025, it brought Gemini into Google Translate for text between English and nearly 20 languages in the US and India, with a focus on idioms and slang.

How Good Is ChatGPT at Translation Next to DeepL?

ChatGPT beat DeepL in the best head-to-head study we found. DeepL focuses on document and business translation, and it added more than 70 languages in late 2025, bringing its total past 100. In a 2025 Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence study, 7 expert raters scored ChatGPT against DeepL and Google Translate on English versions of Chinese tourism texts. ChatGPT with a tailored prompt averaged 4.07 out of 5 overall, against 2.20 for DeepL and 1.90 for Google Translate.

The same study warns that our results align with theirs. The tailored prompt raised fluency and persuasiveness but lowered fidelity from 4.04 to 3.69, and it sometimes added content that never appeared in the source. The researchers used GPT-3.5, an older model than anything in ChatGPT today. If your work centers on European pairs, such as a ChatGPT translate-to-German job for a distributor, run the same paragraph through both tools before you commit.

What Do Independent Studies Say About AI Translation Quality?

The studies below, all from 2025, give the clearest independent read on ChatGPT against dedicated engines.

StudyWhat It TestedWhat It Found
WMT25 General Machine Translation Task (2025)60 systems, including large language models and online engines, across 30 language pairsPreliminary automatic rankings put GPT-4.1 and Gemini 2.5 Pro near the top and commercial engines mid-table; organizers say human evaluation supersedes those scores
npj Digital Medicine (October 2025)ChatGPT-4o against professional linguists on pediatric discharge instructions in 6 languagesChatGPT-4o scored 2.4 against 3.6 in Armenian; human editing of ChatGPT output matched or beat professionals and cut time from 16.8 to 7.1 minutes
JAMA Network Open (September 2025)Microsoft Azure AI Translator against professional translation in 4 languagesAI matched professionals only in Spanish; 92% of Somali sections carried a clinically impactful error
Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence (July 2025)ChatGPT against DeepL and Google Translate on Chinese tourism textsChatGPT led every dimension; tailored prompts cost fidelity

Read together, the studies show large language models ahead of classic engines on context-heavy text, with every tool still weaker in less common languages. The npj and JAMA results say any GPT translator, and every classic engine too, needs a human check in rare languages. ChatGPT for translation of medical text calls for the same check, and the best results in these studies came from a human editor working on top of AI output.

ChatGPT Translation Accuracy: Real Review

OpenAI publishes no translation accuracy score, so every percentage you read for ChatGPT comes from someone's test, including ours. Here is what OpenAI does claim, followed by our own numbers.

What Does OpenAI Claim About ChatGPT Translation Quality?

As a translator, ChatGPT comes with qualitative promises and no published score, and the ChatGPT translator page carries the same caveat:

  • Context and idioms: OpenAI positions ChatGPT Translate as a tool that accounts for idioms and context and lets you describe how the output should sound (Slator).
  • Voice coverage: The GPT-Live announcement says voice performs best in the most popular ChatGPT languages and that some languages can still carry a non-native accent or fluency gaps.
  • No published accuracy score: OpenAI's GPT-Live launch post reports reasoning and voice-agent benchmarks and lists no translation accuracy figure.

Those claims leave the practical question open, so we built a scorecard.

How Good Is ChatGPT at Translating Medical Text? Our Scorecard

Our test passage is a 251-character Korean summary of a GLP-1 drug trial in diabetes patients: 2,480 patients, an 18.7% drop in major adverse cardiovascular events against placebo, and a 1.4 percentage-point fall in HbA1c.

Medical text punishes loose translation, so we split the passage into 12 checkpoints covering the topic, the drug class, the patient group, every number, the 4 trial-design terms, and two clinical terms. Each kept checkpoint scores 1 point, and each missing one scores 0. A checkpoint where the meaning survives in a non-standard form gets half a point.

ChatGPT made no errors on our checkpoints, and no other tool matched that. Each time we asked it to translate, ChatGPT kept every number in all three versions it wrote. Its lead over Google Translate came down to two checkpoints, and a single dropped word on Google's side changed a clinical endpoint.

We also ran the passage through the Translate tab in our own desktop app, and ChatGPT came out ahead. JotMe kept every number and trial-design term. It wrote MACE out in a non-standard word order and skipped the glycated hemoglobin gloss, which puts it second on this passage.

chatgpt translation vs jotme

JotMe added a short summary under our translation, and the desktop app offers a Command + Option shortcut that translates selected text inside any Mac app, which saves time when you handle dozens of snippets a day.

For a single dense paragraph, ChatGPT's translation still used better terminology.

Can ChatGPT Rewrite a Translation for a Cardiologist or a Student?

Yes, and audience rewriting is where ChatGPT pulls away from every engine we tested. We asked it to translate the same Korean text for a cardiologist first.

chatgpt prompt for translation

Once we asked it to translate, ChatGPT took 15 seconds on the cardiologist version. It switched to clinical vocabulary such as "cardioprotective effects" and "enrolled," and it described the result as an "18.7% relative reduction." A cardiologist would read the Korean figure that way, yet the word "relative" appears nowhere in the source. ChatGPT made an interpretive call on your behalf.

Then we asked for a version for a student starting cardiology.

chatgpt for students

The translation ChatGPT produced for the student took 29 seconds and read like a good lecturer's handout. It explained placebo and double-blind in plain words and glossed HbA1c as a marker of average blood sugar.

All three numbers stayed intact, and "multicenter" became "several medical centers," which keeps the meaning in simpler words. The first translation ChatGPT gave us stayed the most faithful of the three.

Audience prompts trade fidelity for fit, which matches what the Frontiers researchers found.

  • When wording carries legal or clinical weight, ask for a faithful translation first and an audience version second, then keep both.
  • When you ask it to translate, ChatGPT follows your audience instruction closely, so spell out which additions you allow.

This prompt shows how to translate using ChatGPT for a specific reader while keeping it honest about its additions:

Prompt: A cleaner audience prompt

Translate the Korean text above into English for [reader: a cardiologist / a first-year medical student].
Keep every number and clinical term exactly as the source states it.
If you add an explanation, put it in square brackets so I can see what you added.
Add no claims that the source does not make.

Where Does ChatGPT Translation Fall Short?

Most of the trouble comes from slow answers at high effort and from words ChatGPT adds on its own.

  • Speed at high effort: Our audience rewrites took 15 and 29 seconds, while Google Translate and the JotMe translator answered instantly.
  • Added words: Audience prompts invite interpretation, and the word "relative" in our cardiologist version shows the biggest risk in using ChatGPT for translation.
  • Less common languages: The npj Digital Medicine study rated ChatGPT-4o at 2.4 out of 5 in Armenian, against 3.6 for professional linguists.
  • Terminology drift between chats: A new chat starts without your glossary, so the next translation ChatGPT writes can swap a product term for a synonym. Paste the glossary again or keep long projects in a single thread.
  • Live, multi-speaker speech: Voice translation runs on a single device, and OpenAI warns about fluency gaps in some languages, which makes group calls the weakest use case.

When to Use ChatGPT for Translation?

ChatGPT does its best work in written tasks where tone and context matter more than speed, and these are the jobs where it pays to translate with ChatGPT. Each scenario below comes with the format that suits it and a prompt you can copy.

Supplier Emails in Japanese

Teams that rely on ChatGPT for translation of supplier emails gain the most from its tone control.

Scenario: A purchasing manager in Chicago needs to tell a supplier in Nagoya that a shipment date moves by 10 days, without sounding abrupt.

Format: A business email of 120 to 180 words, with the subject line in Japanese.

Prompt

Translate this email into polite business Japanese (keigo) for a long-standing supplier in Nagoya. Write dates in the Japanese year-month-day format. Keep our product codes in English. After the translation, list any sentence that sounds too direct in Japanese and suggest a softer version.
[paste email]

What to check: Honorific levels and whether the apology sounds proportionate. Using ChatGPT for translation of anything that changes a contract term still calls for a native-speaking colleague's read. When the supplier replies, a ChatGPT translation to English shows you whether the tone of the relationship shifted.

Can ChatGPT Translate English to Spanish for a Product Launch?

Yes, and Spanish is the language where AI output comes closest to professional work. In the 2025 JAMA Network Open study, an AI translator matched professional translators on adequacy and error severity in Spanish, the only language of the 4 tested where it did. If you translate with ChatGPT for a Mexican audience, name the country in the prompt, since Mexican and Spain Spanish differ in vocabulary and formality.

Scenario: A US skincare brand launches in Mexico and needs product descriptions that sound local.

Format: Product page copy with character limits for titles. State the limit in the prompt, then count the characters yourself.

Prompt

Translate these product descriptions into Mexican Spanish for women aged 25 to 40. Use "tú," keep titles under 60 characters, and convert US measurements to metric. Flag any phrase that sounds like Spain Spanish.
[paste copy]

What to check: Regional words and title length. For slang aimed at a younger audience, ask ChatGPT to list each slang choice so a native speaker can approve it.

ChatGPT Translate to German for Onboarding Guides

A 30-page onboarding guide works if you upload the file and ask for the German version section by section, which keeps each answer short enough to review. A ChatGPT translate-to-German request also needs a decision on formality, since German business writing defaults to "Sie."

Scenario: A software company hands its English onboarding guide to a distributor in Munich.

Format: A PDF or Word file that ChatGPT translates section by section, keeping the headings.

Prompt

I am uploading our onboarding guide. ChatGPT, translate to German section by section, starting with Section 1. Use the formal "Sie" form, keep interface labels in English inside quotation marks, and keep the heading numbers. Wait for my "next" before you continue.

What to check: Compound nouns and layout. For each section you ask it to translate, ChatGPT keeps the heading numbers only if your prompt says so, and tables and headers deserve a check before you share the file.

ChatGPT Translate French to English for Customer Messages

A ChatGPT translation from French to English pass on overnight tickets gives the morning shift a head start. For the French tickets you need to translate, ChatGPT can return a clean table with an urgency label for each ticket.

Scenario: A support team in Toronto receives French-Canadian tickets overnight and needs English summaries before the morning shift.

Format: A table with the English translation and an urgency label for each ticket.

Prompt

Translate each French ticket below into English. Return a table with three columns: ticket number, English translation, and urgency level. Keep Quebec expressions in quotation marks with a short note on their meaning.
[paste tickets]

What to check: Slang and sarcasm, which literal engines often flatten. Each English translation ChatGPT writes should keep the customer's tone, so read the angriest tickets in full. For tickets in other languages, the same ChatGPT translate-to-English prompt works with a single word changed.

Can ChatGPT Translate Images of Labels and Screenshots?

Yes. Upload a photo, name the target language, and ask for the text in reading order. If a photo holds more text than you need to translate, ChatGPT can focus on a single section once you name it.

Scenario: A procurement lead at a trade fair in Shenzhen photographs a Chinese packaging label and a spec sheet.

Format: A photo or screenshot, with a translation that follows the original sections. For a label in clear print, a plain ChatGPT translate-to-English request works well.

Prompt

Translate all text in this photo into English. Keep the layout as a list that follows the label from top to bottom, and mark any text you cannot read clearly as [unclear].

What to check: Small print and stylized fonts, since the translation ChatGPT returns from a photo can misread tiny characters. Treat handwriting as a draft and confirm it with someone who reads the language. We compared 6 image translators on a Japanese infographic in our guide on how to translate an image into 200+ languages.

Quick Spoken Conversations

ChatGPT voice translation works best for short person-to-person exchanges, such as a visiting engineer talking with a factory supervisor. Once you ask it to translate, ChatGPT keeps interpreting until you tell it to stop, so agree on who speaks first.

Scenario: A quality engineer from Ohio walks a plant floor in Busan with a supervisor who speaks Korean only.

Format: A voice session on a single phone, with the phone between both speakers. Whatever language pair you choose to translate, ChatGPT voice works best with short sentences.

Prompt: Spoken instruction

Act as an interpreter between English and Korean. When you hear Korean, say it in English. When you hear English, say it in Korean. Answer no questions yourself.

What to check: Lag on long sentences and names. For recorded audio, a file workflow such as our guide to translating audio and generating captions gives you a transcript you can review.

Is ChatGPT the Right Translation Tool for You?

Yes, if your translation happens in writing and you have a minute to review it. For anything spoken live with more than two people, ChatGPT stops being the right tool.

  • Choose ChatGPT: The ChatGPT language translator fits written work where tone and audience matter, from a ChatGPT translate French to English pass on support tickets to Spanish product pages.
  • Choose Google Translate: For instant lookups and rare languages.
  • Choose a professional translator: As a translator, ChatGPT still needs a human editor on contracts and medical instructions, and the npj study found human-edited AI output matched or beat professionals in less than half the time.
  • Choose JotMe: For live meetings and events where several people speak different languages at once.

Keep using ChatGPT for translation of emails and documents, and plan for a different tool once the conversation goes live.

Most of the teams we work with run a version of the same week. An English-speaking operations lead or managing director spends hours on calls with suppliers and partners in Korea and Japan. A misread sentence on Tuesday's call turns into two to three hours of follow-up emails that a three-minute clarification on the call would have settled. ChatGPT for translation of those emails afterward works fine, and it has no way to hear the call itself.

JotMe handles the call. Our desktop app captures the audio your computer plays, so no bot joins your Zoom or Teams meeting, and you get live translation for meetings and events in 200+ languages across 39,000+ language pairs. You can share the translation with everyone on the call through a link or a QR code, and at an in-person event, attendees follow along on their own phones.

When the meeting ends, JotMe writes notes in each participant's language, and Ask JotMe answers questions about what anyone said. That puts the conversation back in your hands without a $350-per-hour agency interpreter in the middle. For company-wide rollouts or large events, talk to our sales team.

FAQs

How Many Languages Does ChatGPT Support?

OpenAI publishes no single number for ChatGPT translation. ChatGPT Translate launched in January 2026 with more than 50 languages, and the ChatGPT language translator in a regular chat handles many more. ChatGPT translation quality is strongest in widely spoken languages and weakest in languages such as Somali and Armenian, so plan a human review for rare ones. Voice mode follows the same pattern, and OpenAI says some languages can still sound non-native.

Can ChatGPT Transcribe Audio Files?

Yes, with limits. ChatGPT turns speech into text through dictation and, on paid plans, audio file uploads. The macOS app adds a record mode that turns a conversation into notes and summaries. Speaker labels stay inconsistent, and accuracy falls with mixed languages or overlapping voices, as our test of whether ChatGPT can transcribe audio showed.

How to Use ChatGPT for Free?

Sign up at chatgpt.com with an email address or a Google account, and you can translate with ChatGPT on the Free plan right away. To use ChatGPT for translation without paying, open chatgpt.com/translate, where you can use ChatGPT Translate to English free of charge or pick any other target language. As of October 2026, Free accounts run GPT-6 Luna in Chat and GPT-Live-1 mini in voice, with lower limits on file and image uploads than paid plans. The ChatGPT Go plan raises those limits for less than Plus costs.

Can ChatGPT Translate Voice in Another Language?

Yes. Open voice mode and ask ChatGPT to interpret between two languages, and GPT-Live speaks each side's words in the other language until you tell it to stop. It suits short person-to-person talk on a single phone. For a meeting where several people speak, use a live translation tool that captures the call audio and shares captions with every participant.

Is ChatGPT Translator Free?

Yes. You can use ChatGPT Translate to English free of charge, since the tool needed no paid subscription at launch, and the ChatGPT translator inside a regular chat works on the Free plan too. Both the ChatGPT translator page and the main ChatGPT translation app on your phone start free, and translating everyday text to English costs nothing. Paid plans add stronger models and higher upload limits.

Which AI Is Best for Language Translation?

The answer depends on the job. In our test, the ChatGPT translator gave us the most accurate written translation and the best audience rewrites. Google Translate covers the most languages and answers instantly, while DeepL suits document work. ChatGPT handles everything from a ChatGPT translate to German request to a ChatGPT translate French to English ticket, and any of these tools handles a short ChatGPT translate to English request. Spanish is the pair where AI comes closest to a human translator, according to the 2025 JAMA Network Open data. For live meetings and events, JotMe translates the call itself in 200+ languages and shares captions with every participant.
