Recently, I was in California for an event and couldn’t resist purchasing the newly launched Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses. As someone who works so closely with tech, building JotMe, and continuously working on bettering it, I wanted to understand and explore the functionalities of the glasses.

I wanted to do a test ‘through all terrain,’ so I took the Meta Ray-Bans everywhere—on walks, in meetings, and while grabbing a quick cup of coffee outside. After trying them out for a couple of days, I have a mixed bag of reviews. In this review, I am going to share my experience and detail the features I loved, as well as a few things that Meta needs to improve in the glasses.

What are Ray-Ban's Meta Glasses?

Ray-Ban Meta Glasses are smart eyeglasses that combine the style of Ray-Ban frames with advanced functionalities like capturing photos and videos, making calls, listening to music via built-in speakers, and interacting with Meta AI. These glasses come with the Meta Neural Band, which you can wear like a watch, allowing you to control or use the frame via gestures.

What Are the Technology Components of Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses?

As somebody who’s fascinated by AI-powered, wearable tech, I wore the Ray-Ban Meta Display Glasses everywhere and for almost a week, until I had my favorites and not-so-favorites (which I detail later). Let me break down the tech specs of the Ray-Ban Meta Display Glasses, including the camera, display, audio, and battery:

  • Camera: The glasses feature a 12-megapixel, ultra-wide camera with 3x zoom, which helped me capture high-resolution photos and 3K Ultra HD videos.
  • Display: A 600 x 600 pixel high-resolution display in the right lens allowed me to interact with Meta AI, capture photos, and make calls.
  • Audio: It has two open-ear speakers and a six-mic system for clear calls and voice commands, which made it much easier for me to take hands-free calls and meetings.
  • Battery: The 960 mWh (248 mAh) battery capacity of the frame let me use it for up to six hours when I started using the glasses.
  • Memory: The glasses feature an internal storage of 32 GB that can store up to 1,000 photos and more than 100 videos of 30 seconds each. I had a ton of photos and videos that I was able to comfortably store, even though I didn’t completely use up the storage capacity.

OS Compatibility: The glasses are compatible with iOS 15.2 or above and Android 10 or above.

Top 7 Ray-Ban Meta Glasses Features

The Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses have some great features that you can use for specific tasks without depending on your phone. After wearing the glasses for 4-5 days continuously, here are the best and most useful features of the glasses, according to my specifications and needs:

  • Effective Capture of Photos/Videos: The in-lens display showed me a preview of what the camera was capturing. I used the glasses to capture a walk through a new street with simple hand movements. Both the preview feature and the gesture capture feature helped me get the right composition and a professional-quality result.
  • Attend Video Calls On-the-Go: I took a video call with my teammate in Japan while visiting a coffee shop. I could see him on the built-in display, while he saw my POV.
  • Easy Scrolling and Sharing on Instagram: I could use Instagram while I was traveling. The built-in display felt like a private screen that nobody else could see and allowed me to watch and share reels and posts on Instagram via direct message.
  • Quick Messaging: I was able to read and respond to a message without pulling out my phone. The display is small enough that I can keep walking or doing other things while reading messages. However, typing a lengthy message with gestures can feel complicated, and you may need to reach out for your phone anyway.
  • Meta AI: Meta AI worked perfectly, especially in terms of navigation and weather. When I asked for directions to a new area, it gave me turn-by-turn walking directions on the display.
  • Play Music: I was able to listen to music and podcasts on the go with hand gestures. The built-in open-ear speakers didn’t completely muffle outside sound, ensuring I was aware of my surroundings as well.

Is Ray-Ban Meta Available in My Country?

The Ray-Ban Meta Display Smart Glasses are currently available only in the US, with a starting price of $799. The original Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses were released on October 17, 2023, with a second generation (Gen 2) launched on September 17, 2025. More recently, Meta announced and released Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses with augmented reality features, which went on sale on September 30, 2025, at limited retailers.

I live in Japan, and the glasses aren’t available there yet. When I went to California, I was able to get my hands on them and try them out for a couple of days. The Meta Ray-Ban Display is planned to be available in Canada, France, Italy, and the UK in early 2026. Meta states that some features are available in selected languages or countries and asks users to check local availability.

As of now, the initial rollout announcements do not include Japan/Asia, as Meta is focusing on the US first, followed by the UK/Europe next. The US, with its tech-savvy population and significant demand for premium electronic products, is an ideal market for testing and getting feedback on new, luxury products. Some users may import via global retailers, but it comes with the risk of missing features, a lack of warranty, and software support.

I’ve done a region-wise categorization below to help you better understand where the Meta Ray-Ban Display would be available and from when:

Region Status (as of late 2025) Expected / Planned
United States Available (select in-store only) Restocks, possibly broader retail / online later
UK / Europe Not yet launched Early 2026 rollout announced
Japan / Asia Not yet launched / no official date Likely sometime after Europe, but no formal timeline

Meta Ray-Ban Display Review: What I Liked and Where It Needs Improvement?

I bought the glasses soon after release and tried them on, using them in both indoor and outdoor spaces and trying to understand their features, what I liked, and what I didn’t like. After briefly outlining my thoughts about the Ray-Ban Meta Display Glasses on X, I wanted to do a more comprehensive and detailed review of the glasses.

I’ve used the glasses during meetings, during coffee breaks, and for calls with my colleagues back home in Japan. After having used them pretty consistently for 4-5 days, I’ve outlined what stood out to me about the Ray-Ban Meta Display Glasses and what they could’ve done better.

What Impressed Me About the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses?

The Ray-Ban Meta Glasses impressed me with their subtle design, gesture control, live captions, and the in-lens display that shows a preview when using the camera and exhibits notifications and media. I’ve explained them in detail below:

  • Subtle Design and Wearability: The frame is lighter than expected and feels almost like normal eyewear without being obtrusive.
  • Gesture Control via Neural Band: The wrist gestures, including pinch, swipe, and flick, made it easier to control the frame without having to constantly tap it or speak commands.
  • Display Integration: The high-resolution display in the right lens makes it easy to check messages and get captions directly in front of me.
  • Preview in Camera: The in-lens display shows a preview while capturing a photo or video, which allows the user to frame the shots more accurately.
  • Live Captions: Having overlay captions is better than pulling out my phone when I don’t comprehend what someone is saying or if they’re speaking fast.
  • Media and Notifications: I appreciated how I could easily skip songs and receive alerts while also glancing at the album art, although it came with some trade-offs.

Where do the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses Need Improvement?

While there are a number of impressive things about the Meta Ray-Ban Display Glasses, I think there is still room for improvement in terms of battery life, refresh rate, notification overloading, inaccuracy in captions/translations, and more. Here are some areas of improvement that I thought the Ray-Ban Meta Display Glasses could work on:

  • Limited Battery Life: I found that after a few hours of intense use, I had to recharge the glasses, as the display, audio, and AI drain the battery faster.
  • Outdoor Visibility Struggles: Real-world glare can be a challenge in bright sunlight, as the display struggles to remain legible.
  • Refresh Lag: I noticed slight latency while opening apps, and even the content looks less smooth at times.
  • Notification Overload: The constant flow of notifications seemed distracting to me, as it broke my ongoing conversation because a pop-up appeared on the display.
  • Caption Inaccuracies: I have noticed that live captions can sometimes misinterpret or omit words, which can disrupt the conversation flow in noisy areas.
  • Gesture Misfires: I mis-swiped or mis-gestured a few times in the beginning, which made me realize that the sensitivity and calibration still needed fine-tuning.

Overall, the display doesn’t yet operate as flawless AR, but delivers a far better experience than simple smart glasses.

How is JotMe Building the Future of Live Audio Translation for Meta Smart Glasses?

At JotMe, we are actively building an interpreter layer for this device using the Meta Ray-Ban Display SDK or APIs. We aim to make AI interpretation feel like a human conversation. It would be like having a personal and trusted human interpreter next to you.

Here’s what we are focusing on:

  • Expanded Multilingual Support: Meta’s built-in translation covers only a few languages, but we aim to support languages like Japanese, Chinese, French, German, etc., for live audio translation and make the device accessible and viable for global users.
  • Capturing Emotional Tone: Unlike robotic, flat voice outputs, our AI interpreter aims to add intonation, emotional nuance, and context, and provide human-like responses.
  • Low-Latency: We aim to reduce lag using edge computing and optimized pipelines, so the captions, translations, or voice responses are close to real-time.
  • Adaptive Notification Filtering: Our AI personal interpreter will display only relevant notifications and keep the others muted unless you request otherwise.
  • Seamless Gestures: We are refining responses to gestures to make them intuitive and less error-prone. For example, “pause translation,” “repeat that line,” or “summarize” are mapped to gestures.
